Meet Our Guides

We are proud to have the best upland guides in the state working with us here.

Casey Phelps

Casey began guiding for Montana Bird Hunts in 2016 and is now the proud owner. Casey grew up in Idaho and lives in Helena, Montana.  Casey has lived and guided both hunting and fishing all over Montana since 2006. Guiding many different rivers, and hunting all over the state has given him a bounty of experience. From horse pack trips in the wilderness to antelope on the plains. Casey runs setters, pointers and German wire-haired pointers.  Besides guiding bird hunters, Casey guides fly-fishermen in the spring and summer on the Missouri River near Craig, Montana.

“I grew up in northern Idaho hunting and fishing. Having many family ties to Montana and a love for agriculture and outfitting brought me to Helena after graduating college. I attended Boise State University where I was fortunate to compete on the wrestling team. I have been guiding, working on ranches, coaching wrestling and raising my family ever since. I love all hunting, but there is nothing like sharing a hunt with my dogs.”

Kevin Edwards

Kevin made the jump from California in 1990 and since has called Livingston, Montana home for the last 25 years.  Kevin grew up fishing the banks of the Owen’s River and chasing Valley Quail with his Springer. Currently a string of 7 pointers and Cleo the Lab get the job done for him. Kevin also has a degree in the Culinary Arts so ask him some questions about cooking wild game. During the Spring and Summer months he can be found guiding fisherman down one of the many rivers in Southwest Montana. Kevin and his dogs look forward to spending time afield with you and yours.

Lance Gray

Lance Gray grew up south of Livingston, MT in the Paradise Valley. With such close proximity to nature Lance quickly developed a love for the outdoors. Hunting and fishing was very much part of the Gray household. Through college Lance worked as a whitewater rafting guide and occasional trout bum. Holding a bachelor’s degree in Communication's Lance loves sharing the local area history, wildlife, and the process of developing bird dogs. Lance has his own string of Pointers, and English Setters.

During the spring and summer months Lance works as fishing guide, and during the off season can be found pursuing bonefish, tarpon, and permit somewhere in the Caribbean. He shares this life with his wife and two children.

Taylor Todd

Taylor Todd has been guiding for Montana Bird Hunts since 2021.  He grew up in Northern California and after graduating from Oregon State he eventually settled in Helena, Montana where he has been guiding fisherman on the Missouri River since 2013. When Taylor isn’t out hunting or fishing he is usually spending time with his family or training his string of english setters, pointers, and labs.

Dennis Kavanaugh

Dennis has been bird hunting over pointing and flushing dogs for over 40 years. Dennis grew up in Michigan hunting ruffed grouse, woodcock and pheasant. Dennis is a graduate of Michigan Technological University.

Dennis has been a licensed Montana outfitting and bird hunting guide since 1982, and is the original owner of Montana Bird Hunts. Currently, Dennis runs English setters and cockers.
